Ball Handling:
-Beat your man off the dribble by staying lower than the defender and taking an aggressive straight angle towards the basket!
-Maintain a hard dribble when a defensive player is close to you. When the defense is close, you also want to shorten up your dribble from waist height to about knee height. This allows you to maintain more control over the ball and change directions faster to get in and out of your moves!
Offensive Tempo:
-Vary your tempo at all times so that your defender can never understand your rhythm. Move slow, then fast. Find a neutral gear to move in (I call it 3rd gear) and then throttle up and down from there. Stay aggressive while still maintaining poise and patience.
-The "Speed Zone" is from foul line to foul line. As a point guard you always want to push the ball hard and under control in the speed zones (depending on time and score in any given game) to probe the defense and see if you can get an easy transition fast break or nice pull up jumper around the free throw line. Get all the way to the basket if you can!
Shooting:
-Shooting shots in volume is a good thing! At least 250 to be serious about improving your stroke.
Don't confuse shot volume with proper and CONSISTENT technique.
You must shoot the SAME shot repeatedly to see the greatest improvement.
Post Play:
-Post Players need to be patient as well. Receive the post pass and chin the ball, locate your defender and the rest of the defense and then go to work!
Defense:
-Defensively-Try not to ever allow your feet to be closer that 1.5 feet apart. In some situations this is unavoidable but if you keep this idea in your head you will have better balance and footwork which will allow you to play more aggressive defense. This foot spacing will also allow you to recover if you get beat.
-As a defender you should use the sideline, bassline and half court lines as extra defenders. Funnel the offensive player towards these areas to create pressure on the offense. This works to create turnovers and get a team out of what they want to do offensively.
Updates coming all the time!! Enjoy and get to work on owning your game!!!
